Sinusitis is caused by
inflammation of the inner layer is often caused by a sinus infection. Treatment
is usually self-care and home remedies as the causative agent of frequent colds
or flu virus that has no specific drugs.
How long does the
treatment of sinusitis take?
Most patients recover
within a week to 10 days of symptoms such as reduced infection. However, in
some cases it may be sinusitis infection lasts for more than three months. This

Home treatment for
sinusitis
Home treatment involves
inhaling warm moist air from a humidifier or vaporizer. Alternatively, steam
can be inhaled in a basin of hot water or shower. It helps open blocked sinuses
and allow mucus to flow out so relief from pain. Warm compresses can be applied
in the sinuses to relieve the pain.
Patients are advised
plenty of rest and drink plain water.
Decongestants for
sinusitis
Decongestants can help
in some cases. It may be they are prescribed by a doctor or maybe they are
available over-the-counter. It may be available as a liquid, tablet or nasal
spray. Generally, nasal spray decongestants should not be used for more than 3
days. Long-term use can cause more harm to the mucous membranes.
Pain for sinusitis
For as long as sinus
pain and fever over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can
be used.
Vitamin C and zinc
gluconate lozenges were recommended by some to relieve symptoms. Echinacea
extracts have also shown benefit in some studies.
Nasal irrigation Copy
The nose may be
irrigated with normal saline. This is called nasal irrigation Copy. This can be
done in the doctor's office by a specialist ENT or even be done at home using a
"Neti pot '(such as tea pots and utensils with snout). Saline was poured
through one nostril and used to irrigate the nasal passages and sinuses. Use
the 'Neti pot' requires expertise and guidance.
Treatment of sinusitis
in children
For infants and
children who can not blow your nose, nasal aspirator can be used to suction
each nostril gently before applying nasal drip.
Antibiotics for
sinusitis
Usually required in
patients who have a bacterial infection or a fungal sinus. Antibiotics will
also be required in patients with viral infections and inflammations if there
is a secondary bacterial infection.
In the case of
bacterial sinusitis, 70% of patients improve within 2 weeks without antibiotics
and about 85% increase with antibiotics is necessary. Azithromycin is one of
the antibiotics approved for use in acute bacterial sinusitis.
Other antibiotics,
including Levofloxacin-bacterial antibiotics can be used if the first line
failed to show a response. The alternative is clarithromycin, Doxycycline,
Amoxicillin etc..
Anti-Allergy
If allergies cause
recurrent sinusitis, anti-allergy medications such as antihistamines may be
prescribed. These include agents such as Levocetirizine.
Prescription nasal
spray
Patients with severe
inflammation of the nasal and sinus membranes oesophageal may need a
prescription nasal spray with corticosterone like Fluticasone, or Beclomethasone
Betamethasone. It is available only with medical advice and care must be taken
not to use it outside of a prescription or stop them suddenly without medical
advice as this can worsen the condition.
Some nasal spray with
sodium Cromolyn also determined. This is very beneficial in the long run
because they are allergic to prevent recurrent attacks of sinusitis.
Surgical therapy for
sinusitis
People who do not
respond to drugs or have long-term problems such as sinusitis with nasal polyp
anatomy, keep the nasal septum, nasal bony spurs or large adenoids, may need
surgical therapy. Surgery can be done to improve their conditions and removal
of polyps or adenoids is usually done to prevent recurrent sinusitis.
This operation,
however, should be done after the correction of infection to avoid
complications. Another surgical option is to create an additional or enlarged
hallway wall so sinus sinuses drain more easily through the nose.
Avoiding smoking, air
pollution and trigger allergic
Patients are advised to
avoid smoking, air pollution, avoiding allergic triggers such as pet hair, dust
mites, etc. to prevent sinusitis.
Complications of
sinusitis
Complications of
sinusitis include meningitis or brain abscess, bone and blood infections
(sepsis). These are usually rare and occur in people with compromised immunity.
Admission to hospital
may be necessary for those with severe infection, severe headache, symptoms of
neurological disease, blurring of vision, spreading into the eyeball and eye
socket, people with suppressed immunity, etc..
